Fire and Rescue Services personnel from the Coimbatore South fire station conducted a drill at Kurichi Tank on Friday for the public to know how prepared are the personnel, and how to stay safe in monsoon. The drill was performed by a team of 10 persons led by station fire officer P. Annadurai.

They enacted a scene in which they rescued persons stranded in low level areas and in situations of flood or drowning in water bodies. Rescuers used simple floats made with readily available materials such as sack of thermocol, empty plastic cans tied together, rope and lifebuoys and life jackets.

The personnel said that such demonstrations would be organised by other fire and rescue services stations in the district in various types of water bodies such as tanks, quarry puddles and rivers where people go for a bath or get accidentally stranded during monsoon.

The personnel also distributed pamphlets on safety precautions to be taken by the public in the monsoon and what to do to get to safety during emergencies. The pamphlets advised people to avoid taking a dip in water pools in stone quarries, talking in mobile phones when there is lightning, among others.

The pamphlets were distributed at the railway junction, bus stands and at other places.
