The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Regional Integrated Multi Hazard Early Warning System for Asia and Africa (RIMES) to collaborate on climate information services for agricultural risk management.
A release from the university said the agreement paved for the parties to develop research-based projects to use weather and climate information at various time scales for better decision making by farmers in different agro-climatic zones.
This would help farmers use climate as a resource to maximise benefits and reduce crop loss.
Support unit
The release also said that RIMES had established an operational support unit at the Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority and built a decision support system called the Tamil Nadu System for Multi Hazard Potential Impact Assessment, Alert, Emergency Response Planning and Tracking.
Agreement
The university’s former Vice-Chancellor K. Ramasamy signed the agreement on its behalf and RIMES Director Santha Sheela Nair signed the agreement on behalf of the organisation.
