Members of the Tamil Manila Congress on Friday staged a protest in front of the Coimbatore South Taluk office demanding total prohibition. Led by the party’s State vice president Kovai Thangam, District president Arumugham, former MLA K. Maheswari and State Secretary P.S. Saravanakumar, the members urged the State Government to bring in total prohibition.
Liquor shops
Addressing the party cadre, Mr. Thangam said that ever since the Dravidian parties granted permission to open liquor shops in the State and took over the retailing business, hundreds of families had faced penury; youth had lost their lives and the State was on the path of ruin.
In the interests of the society, the Government should usher in prohibition, if not the TMC would intensify its protest, he added. Around 600 persons, including 200 women, participated in the protest.
The Nilgiris
In the Nilgiris, the TMC members led by District Secretary N. Chandran staged a protest at the ATC in Ooty. According to sources, around 100 members participated in the protest demanding prohibition.
