K. Thangavelu (57), Head Surveyor of Madukkarai Taluk, was arrested by sleuths from the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption (DVAC) on Monday, after he was caught while accepting Rs. 5,000 bribe from a farmer.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of DVAC, Coimbatore, G. Murugesan said that farmer S. Mani alias Iyyamuthu (54), of Ooratukuppai village, near Madukkarai, had applied for survey of 10 acres that was in the name of his father Kandhasamy.
The DSP said that Thangavelu refused to complete the survey till the farmer gave him Rs. 20,000 bribe. Later, he demanded Rs. 15,000, of which Rs. 5,000 was sought as advance. On Monday, the farmer lodged a complaint against Thangavelu with DVAC. The sleuths gave the farmer chemical coated currencies to nab Thangavelu.
Case registered
Thangavelu was arrested and booked under sections 7 and 13(i)(d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. He has been lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison.
