Actor Simbu has been summoned to appear before the Race Course Police Station in Coimbatore on December 19 for inquiry in connection with a case registered against him and music director Anirudh based on a complaint over their ‘Beep’ song.
On Monday, a police constable from the Race Course Police Station, accompanied by a constable from the Mambalam Police Station in Chennai, went to Simbu’s house to serve the summons. In Simbu’s absence, it was received by his father T. Rajendran. The police went to Anirudh’s place to serve the summons but it was a wrong address.
The two were booked under section 4 read with section 6 of the Indecent Representation of Women Act and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult modesty of a woman) of Indian Penal Code and 67 (publishing or obscene material in electronic form) of the IT Act. Inspector V. Selvaraj, who is investigating the case, said the police had also initiated the process to confirm if the voice of the singer in the controversial song was that of the actor. They sought the Cyber Crime Police help. “If needed, the actor will have to appear in person for the voice test,” a police officer said. The police were also trying to ascertain the role of the music director, though he had distanced himself from the song through statements in the social media. Meanwhile efforts were under way to find out who had uploaded the song online and on social media.
Action sought
R. Rajaram from Tiruchi writes:
Representatives of the National Women’s Front met the Tiruchi Commissioner of Police Sanjay Mathur at the City Police Office on Monday and submitted a petition seeking action against actor Simbu and Anirudh under the Women Harassment Act.
Condemning the indecent portrayal of women in films and posters, the members said such actions would create dangerous and insecure situation for the women community.
The government should keep a watch on the social media regarding such vulgar portrayals and take steps to check them, they said.
