Students of colleges and schools have shared their vision for the Coimbatore Smart City project.

Essay writing

The Corporation and the Smart City project management consultant, ICRA, conducted an essay writing competition to learn about what ideas students had for the city. As many as 272 students participated in the contest, which the organisers held in the three categories – Class IX students, Class XI students and college students.

One of the three short-listed students, G. Gayathri, of the Corporation school on Oppanakara Street, wanted the civic body to increase green cover by planting saplings on reserve sites and vacant spaces, promote green buildings, provide automatic timers at traffic signals to ease traffic congestion and provide smart street lighting.

She also suggested placing complaint/suggestion boxes at prominent locations for the public to express their opinions. A. Mahalakshmi, another Class IX student, felt the Corporation should focus on waste segregation and promote use of bicycles by having dedicated lanes for them.

Uma Maheswari of Ramakrishnapuram Corporation school said that the civic body should replace blackboards with smart boards in all schools.

K. Poornima of SRP Ammani Ammal School hoped the civic body would end open defecation.

Sudishma S. of CMS Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Ganapathy, suggested that the traffic signals be automated to prioritise movement of ambulance.

Many college students expressed a common desire to improve green cover.

Corporation sources said that they would soon give away prizes to students whom they had selected.
