A project developed by five students of Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Sathyamangalam, that won an international contest recently is selected for receiving funding of ₹ 22 lakh from Israel to develop it into a commercial product in collaboration with Innovation Valley, Andhra Pradesh.

The team comprising five students from the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering and one student from the Department of Information Technology developed water purifying device, NeerAathar, which is capable of detecting the presence of contaminants and measuring the concentration of the same.

The students were S. Bharathraj, Dharani Subburajulu, G. Darshan, K. Deepak and Mathu Priya. The device could be used in public tanks and reservoirs.

The team named as “HACK O´ HOLICS” has taken the step to solve water crisis and related problems by purifying it efficiently.

Technology

“The technology of ‘image processing’ plays a major role in the analysis. When a specific reagent is added to the sample collected from the tank, the colour of the sample changes in accordance with the concentration of the pollutants present. This principle is scientifically referred to as ‘Colorimetry’,” the students said.

The institute has supported the students’ initiative by sponsoring the total cost for the project. The team participated in the “Sunrise Open Contest Hackathon” conducted by India and Israel that was organised by Innovation Valley, Government of Andhra Pradesh, on February 2 and 3 at Visakhapatnam and won a cash prize of ₹1.5 lakh.
