The School Education Department has begun taking stock of the Plus Two public examination results. Even while Coimbatore achieved a historic State first rank for the first time in several decades, it slipped in the overall State-wide ranking. The pass percentage fell by a marginal 0.54 and the Government schools also failed to better their previous year’s performances.

Chief Educational Officer A. Gnanagowri told The Hindu here on Monday that a questionnaire had been mailed to all schools, Government, aided and private, regarding the Plus Two results.

They have been instructed to provide information about the number of failures, whether in one subject or more and the attendance levels of the students who failed. Information on the health of the students who failed and the vacancy levels have also been sought.

Further, the schools have also been asked to identify the possible reasons for the failures and suggest corrective measures. The focus of this exercise will be on the Government schools, she said. A total of 78 Government Higher Secondary Schools sent as many as 9,770 candidates for the examination, of which 8,580 passed (87.82 per cent). This does not compare favourably with the last year’s performance in which 74 schools sent 9,690 students with 8,563 pass or 88.37 p.c. clearing the exam.

Five Government schools managed to secure cent per cent pass percentage this year, compared to eight last year. A total of 134 schools got this achievement this year, up by just one from last year.

The pass percentage declined significantly in municipal schools, which recorded 90.58 per cent in 2014 but fell to 86.71 per cent this year. Aided schools also recorded a marginal decline, down to 96.34 per cent from last year’s 97.14 However, schools run by Social Welfare Department recorded an increase, going up to 78.13 per cent from 66.67 per cent last year.

The data submitted by the schools would be consolidated and reviewed shortly. The opinion of headmasters would be obtained through review meetings and solutions would be arrived at before the beginning of the next academic year in June.
