Hans Raj Verma, Secretary, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), said here on Friday that Salem district has the potential to become the national model for MSME development in the country.

“Be it textiles, steel, or defence corridor related auxiliary units, the scope for development is huge in Salem. The district has the potential to be on the map of India as a very vibrant industrial district led by the MSMEs,” Mr. Verma told entrepreneurs at a brainstorming session for MSME sector organised by the Salem District Small Scale and Tiny Industries Association here.

Representatives of various industrial bodies and entrepreneurs aired their grievances and shared their views in the meeting. One of the delegates said that Salem was in need of a proper industrial park. If such a park was established, it should not be far away from the city as the MSMEs would not be able to bear the cost of freight charges, he said.

An agro industrialist said the government should consider waiving off CIBIL score report for bank loans for farmers.

Chocko Valliappa, vice-chairman of Sona Group of Institutions, highlighted the need for proper training or support for persons who come out of skill development institutes here.

A few industrialists also demanded an exhibition centre, similar to Codissia, in Salem to display products of various industries. Representatives of various banks and NABARD took part.
