Residents of Kilkodapamund in the Nilgiris district staged a road roko on Wednesday demanding repairs to a drainage, which they alleged was overflowing on the roads and posing a health hazard.

According to police officials, the residents initially sat for around 20 minutes on the Ooty - Kotagiri Road. However, they moved to the adjacent Ooty - Kilkodapamund after the police urged them to make way for ambulances.

The residents said that the drainage had been a longstanding problem. Despite petitions being given to the Udhagamandalam Municipality and the Nilgiris district administration, the residents claimed that no action had been taken.

Further, they alleged that the councillor for the sixth ward, which covered the Kilkodapamund locality, never comes to her constituency with only her husband doing the rounds. There were around 2,000 houses in the locality.

Talks held

Ooty Town Police Inspector S. Vinayagam held negotiations with the protestors. A municipal official told the agitators that repairs works worth Rs. 2.6 lakh had been planned and would commence as early as next Monday after the local body approved the project. They dispersed following this assurance.
