Residents of Rakkipalayam in Narasimhanaickenpalayam submitted a petition to District Collector on Monday opposing the setting up of a liquor outlet in their area.

Rastriya Hindu Parishad has urged the Coimbatore district administration to close two liquor shops that they said were located close to a temple and on a road frequented by students.

In its petition submitted at the weekly grievances redress day meeting on Monday, the organisation said that shop 1711 was on Thomas Street and shop 1725 was close to Plague Mariamman Temple, near T.K. Market.

The shops were on the road that students used to reach their schools, particularly the girl students of the Government school on Raja Street, and customers to the market.

Therefore, in the interest of the public and in compliance with a court order directing closure of liquor shops, the administration should close the two shops.

‘Don’t set up liquor outlet’

Residents of Rakkipalayam in Narasimhanaickenpalayam petitioned the district administration to stop the move to set up a liquor shop in their neighbourhood.

In the appeal they made at the weekly grievance day meeting on Monday, they said that the TASMAC management was taking steps to set up the shop on a farm on Rakkipalayam-Pudupalayam Road . If the shop were to be set up it would be the second one for the village.

The new shop would trouble residents, particularly the students, of Krishna Nagar, Annai Indra Nagar, Amutham Nagar and Abdul Kalam Nagar. The administration should therefore prevail upon the TASMAC management to give up the move, they demanded.

‘Regulate parking fee collection at airport’

Non-government organisation Makkal Padhai has asked the Coimbatore district administration to regulate parking fee collection at Coimbatore airport parking lot. In its petition, the organisation represented by K. Dorairaj, said taxi drivers going to the airport to pick up or drop passengers had to exit the place within three minutes to escape paying ₹60.

If they exceeded the time limit then they would have to shell out the money. But of late, the contractor managing the parking lot had started demanding money even for entering the airport premises. This was illegal.

The administration should therefore take up the issue with the airport management and ensure that the contractor did not fleece the taxi drivers or passengers.

‘Stop NEET’

Campus Front of India on Monday petitioned the district administration at the weekly grievances redress meeting to forward to the State Government their demand for a ban on NEET. They also demanded free and quality education, closure of education institutions that were run for profit, and increase in number of education institutions run by the government.
