The residents of Pavadi Street and nearby regions here staged a road roko near Pattakovil on Saturday to draw attention to the long-standing issue of sewage mixing with drinking water in the area.

The residents complained that they were being supplied contaminated water for the last six months and the civic body officials have not bothered to act upon their repeated complaints.

G. Sabari, one of the residents said, “the sewers in the region always remain clogged and they are not cleared on a regular basis. The sewers are at least 2ft deep and sewage stagnates in them. During rains, the sewage overflows posing health risks to the residents here.”

The residents claimed that the sewage mixes with drinking water supplied to the region.

Residents complained that they were forced to buy packaged drinking water spending thousands of rupees due to poor quality of water. Following public protests, Corporation staff visited the area and took steps to clean the sewer.

Corporation officials also checked for any crack in drinking water pipelines laid in the region.

Officials said that the leak from an individual house led to the contamination and steps were being taken to fix the leak.
