The picturesque Kaniravuthar Kulam in the city is covered with water hyacinth. The residents of the area have urged the City Municipal Corporation to remove the hyacinth and take steps to restore and beautify the lake.

The lake, spread across 14.40 acre, is maintained by the civic body. A portion of the lake has been encroached by an individual who has constructed buildings.

The lake was desilted a few months ago by the civic body with the help of Olirum Erode Foundation and a few other organisations that work for protecting water bodies. However, water hyacinth still covers a few portion of the lake.

Due to lack of maintenance, the lake was losing its importance, the residents said and wanted measures taken to protect it.

Sewage

People of Periya Semur also complained about discharge of sewage into the lake. They wanted it to be stopped immediately and beautification works done.

The residents also wanted walkways and parks developed around the lake.

Though the Corporation had proposed to take up diversion of waste water and beautification of the lake, works have not commenced.
