A village panchayat in the district has called for the closure of a factory, which it accuses of polluting the environment and emitting toxic fumes.
The Machakavundampalayam Panchayat passed the resolution during a gram sabha meeting accusing the battery-processing unit of causing an increase in incidents of cancer in the area.
Accompanied by a number of residents of the village, Panchayat President D. Jameela, who belongs to the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, submitted the resolution to District Administration during the public grievances meeting held at the Coimbatore Collectorate on Monday.
The residents said that incidents of respiratory diseases had increased considerably in recent months.
Despite several petitions to the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and other departments, the residents said that no action had been taken so far.
Drainage facility sought
Valparai MLA M. Arumugam urged the district administration to establish proper drainage facilities and health infrastructure in Sankalikonar Thottam, which comes under the 7th Ward in Western Zone of Coimbatore Corporation. In a petition submitted during the public grievances meeting, he said that several petitions had already been submitted on this issue to the authorities but no action had been taken so far.
Liquor outlet
Residents of Subramanianpalayam in GN Mill post have urged the district administration to close a liquor outlet in their area. In a petition, the residents said that the area had a lot of families belong to socio-economically weaker sections of the society.
The liquor outlet was causing a lot of problems as people coming out in an inebriated condition were harassing the local women. Recently, a girl suffered head injury after being assaulted by a man coming out of the liquor outlet.
