From next Tuesday (June 9), police inspectors in all the 15 Law and Order and the equal number of Crime police stations and the three All Woman Police Stations in the city will be available at the respective police stations for three hours a day to redress the grievances of the public.
City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan told The Hindu that the initiative is to take the police one more step closer to the public and to help them (public) get their grievances redressed without waiting at the police stations – not knowing when the inspectors will be available.
“The inspectors will be available from 12 noon to 1.30 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. on all days except Sundays and on days when they have something urgent to address,” the Commissioner said. Inspector of the Race Course police station will be available from 7 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. and not in the above said time slot for the evening session.
The evening duration is aimed at benefiting employed persons.
Mr. Viswanathan said that the time was finalised after discussions with the inspectors in the city.
“Officers in the rank of deputy commissioner and assistant commissioners, too, have been asked not to convene meetings for inspectors at the said time,” he added. Police sources said that higher officers would also be checking if the inspectors were at their stations in the said time.
As part of the initiation, the police department will display the numbers of the inspectors at every police station, so that the public could fix appointment with the inspector to discuss important cases. The effort is expected to quicken police verification for issuance of passports.
On the reason behind the initiative, a senior police officer said that in a recent study they came to know that the public did not know when their inspector was available at the station. Though an officer in the rank of sub-inspector or special sub-inspector is available at the station, inspector’s presence is required for registering select cases and to solve cases.
