Plastic manufacturers urge Corpn. to seize only banned items

Members of the Coimbatore District Plastic Manufacturers Association on Friday petitioned the Coimbatore Corporation asking its officials to seize only banned plastic items.

In its representation, the Association said civic body officials who went around seizing banned plastic items, also took away primary packing materials and containers though the State Government had not banned those. The Corporation Commissioner should therefore instruct the officials to seize only the banned items.

It drew the Corporation’s attention to the use of degradable materials as primary packing materials when they ought to be used as only carry bags and the failure of the manufacturers of such degradable bags to obtain the permission of the Central Pollution Control Board, as mandated under the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016.

The Association also wanted the Corporation to look into the supply of paper-cover plastic covers and LDPE plastic covers that were coated with aluminium foil, pointing out that they too were banned.
