In a bid to ensure smooth flow of vehicles along the Oppanakara Street, the traffic police have denied parking on a stretch of the busy national highway, from the Big Bazaar Street Junction to the Raja Street Junction, from Monday.
Till Sunday parking on one side of the road was permitted along the Oppanakara Street. But this resulted in heavy traffic congestion on NH-209. Parking has been denied now based on a study conducted in November 2014.
Assistant Commissioner (West) Raj. Khanna said that the study revealed that about 300 vehicles were parked on the stretch during the day.
About 90 per cent of the vehicles were of the owners of the nearby shops or their employees, he said.
Though parking on one side was allowed to benefit customers coming to the shops, the study showed that only 10 per cent of the vehicles belonged to them. Traders and employees of firms along the Oppanakara Street would be allowed to park their two-wheelers at a concessional monthly parking fee of Rs. 200 against the usual parking fee of Rs. 500, at the corporation parking lot on Raja Street.
Traffic police personnel said that parking along the entire stretch of Oppanakara Street will be denied soon.
