The National Commission for Scheduled Castes that visited the Bharathiar University for a probe into complaints of non-compliance to reservation norms in filling vacancies has complained of non cooperation by top officials.

The university had, in November last, filled 80 posts of readers, lecturers, professors, and assistant professors.

Reservation norms were not adhered to in respect of filling 17 positions of non-teaching staff, according to complaints.

Vice-Chairman of the panel, Murugan, held preliminary inquiries during his recent visit to Coimbatore. Director of the Commission, M. Mathiazhagan, senior investigators A. Iniyan, and S. Lister visited the university on Friday. They had to wait for 45 minutes and returned as they were not able to meet top officials in the university.

The commission visited the Government Hospital for Women here too.

Mr. Mathiazhagan told reporters here that the university failed to cooperate with the commission, and officials were not present.

Mr. Mathiazhagan said that the State Government would construct a hostel in Tirunelveli at a cost of Rs. 3.85 crore for college students belonging to the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes.
