Right across the Sangaralinganar Road that connects Mettupalayam Road to Sathyamangalam Road flows an open drain.

Farm

Near Nehru Nagar, the drain flows from north to south through a furrow the corporation had dug to convey the sewage to a farm on the southern side. This has almost stopped movement of vehicles between Nallampalayam and Maniakarampalayam.

The problem has been there for over a month-and-a-half, rues M. Krishnasamy, a resident of Maniakarampalayam and former councillor. Road users proceeding to Sathyamangalam Road, Saravanampatti and areas east of Maniakarampalayam are forced to take circuitous route via Vijaya Nagar and Anbu Nagar, which is more than a km diversion.

The corporation could have avoided inconveniencing the road users had it completed its work in time, he also says.

The civic body is building a culvert to convey the sewage that joins the Ganapathy Canal.

The open drain across the road has only added to the residents’ woes, complains P. Murugesan, a resident of Ilango Nagar.

Almost the entire Sangaralinganar Road is already unfit for use because of the pipeline laying work the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage has undertaken.

Even then two-wheeler riders are using the road. But, this open drain has made it impossible even for them to move from one side to another.

To drive around the drain the motorcyclists are forced to drive on the edge of the road, on an elevated ground and this is dangerous, he says and adds that a few riders have fallen off the edge of the road, into the drain.

The corporation should expedite the culvert construction work to throw it open for road users at the earliest, they demand.

Corporation officials could not be reached for their comments.
