PWD clears obstacles on canals linking the Noyyal

The recent showers have recharged river Noyyal and the water flow has reached Chithirai Chavadi, around seven km away from Kooduthurai where the river originates.

People, who track the water level in the river, said that good rain for at least a week in the catchment areas were required for the water flow to reach Perur.

The main reason for the current recharge of Noyyal was following an increase in the water flow in tributaries Chinnar, Periyar and Kanchimanadhi following the recent rain. While Chinnar and Periyar joins at Solaipadugai, Kanchimanadhi joins the confluence to form Noyyal at Kooduthurai near Mathvarayapuram to form Noyyal.

According to G. Ramkumar of Siruvani Vizhuthugal, water level in Chinnar was steadily increasing following repeated rain in the region.

Water conservation expert K. Mylswami said that the current water level of Noyyal at Chithirai Chavadi was around half feet to one feet.

“This year we did not receive copious rain in the catchment areas in June as expected. Had the areas received good rain, the water flow would have crossed Chithirai Chavadi in June. More rain in the hills on the Tamil Nadu side of forests are needed for further recharge of the river,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Public Works Department has cleared obstacles on canals linking the Noyyal with two tanks at Chithirai Chavadi anaicut for smooth flow of water.

The Revenue Department has taken steps to stop illegal sand mining from the river bed at Alandurai, Mathvarayapuram, Iruttupallam, Thennamanallur, Pooluvampatti, Semmedu, Pooluvapatti, Madampatti, Perur and Theethipalayam.
