Now, mothers in transit have the privacy to feed their infants at bus stands, as two non-governmental organisations based in the city have joined hands to put up closed enclosures for lactating mothers at four bus terminals in the city.

On Monday, one such nursing pod was opened at Coimbatore Corporation’s bus terminal on Mettupalayam Road by Deputy Commissioner Police - Coimbatore City (Law and Order) S. Lakshmi and obstetrician and gynaecologist Suma Natarajan. The other nursing pods are located in Gandhipuram, Singanallur and Ukkadam bus terminals.

The initiative by Chandrans Yuva Foundation, Agni Women Empowerment Organisation marks the World Breastfeeding Week observance that began here on August 1.

Each cubicle has enough space to accommodate four mothers and are equipped with LED lights, fans and toys.

Experts who spoke at the event said that a lot of young mothers are not aware of the benefits of breast feeding for the child. Therefore, the NGOs have decided to spread awareness on breast feeding across the city and in villages. D. Sneha, Assistant Collector (Training) spoke.
