A non-governmental organisation distributed helmets in a bid to spread awareness about wearing it here on Monday.

Pasiyara Soru, the NGO based in Kuniamuthur, supplied 20 helmets to two-wheeler riders and pillion riders at the State Bank Road near the District Collectorate. Rajhasethumurali, founder of the NGO, said that the initiative began on Independence Day.

“We distributed 20 helmets on August 15 at the Anna Statue,” he said. However, the NGO members do not offer the helmets to every two-wheeler rider, as Mr. Rajhasethumurali pointed out that the helmets were distributed to those who could not afford to purchase it. All the helmets were certified by ISO, he said.

Mr. Rajhasethumurali said that 100 helmets will be distributed in similar initiatives by the end of August.

“This initiative aims not just the two-wheeler drivers but also the pillion riders,” he noted, adding that the response from the public was positive. The NGO will also aim to provide welfare assistance to 500 families of students from government schools and orphanages for Deepavali.
