Officials of various government departments have been asked to mobilise over 40,000 beneficiaries for the MGR Centenary celebrations to be held in Coimbatore on December 3, official sources said here on Monday.

A top official on condition of anonymity told The Hindu that the list of 35,000 beneficiaries were received from various departments till Monday morning and it was expected that the figure may cross 40,000-mark. Select beneficiaries will be called on to the stage.

Beneficiaries were selected by various departments for free house site patta, old-age pension, monthly assistance and assistive devices, including motorised scooters, to about 50 differently abled persons and over 1,500 under the marriage assistance scheme, sources said.

The beneficiaries were selected according to merit from the 12 panchayat unions and five zones in the Coimbatore Corporation limits, they added.

Arrangements are afoot to arrange 10,000 chairs in the meeting venue. A maximum of 15,000 to 16,000 people can be accommodated at the VOC Ground, sources in the Police Department said.
