V.S. Vijay, State Health Minister, held review meetings in the city on Tuesday to review mosquito control measures. He also visited the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital as part of his visit to the city.
At the Collectorate and the Corporation Kalaiarangam the Minister asked officials to destroy adult mosquitoes and larvae and conduct mass cleaning campaigns in panchayats, town panchayats, municipalities and municipal corporations, said a release.
He directed the Health Department staff and doctors in-charge of government hospitals to ensure that they had adequate stock of medicines required to fight mosquito-induced diseases.
The release said that the Minister enquired with the local bodies if they had deputed adequate number of staff for mosquito-control operations.
He told the representatives of local bodies in Palani, Kodaikanal and other tourist places that they should walk the extra mile to take enough precautions because of the high floating population.
There was an urgent need to focus on mosquito-control operations because of the impending monsoon.
Dr. Vijay told the officials that the Chief Minister had sanctioned Rs. 3.50 crore for initiating anti-malarial activities in the State and was ready to allot even more.
During his visit to the CMCH, the Minister went to inspect facilities at the blood bank, intensive care unit, TB ward and the area where the beneficiaries of the health insurance scheme were being treated. He interacted with the patients and asked if they had complaints.
Collector M. Karunagaran, Mayor S.M. Velusamy, Corporation Commissioner T.K. Ponnusamy, State Health Department staff, representatives from the Corporation’s health wing and other senior government officials participated in the function.
