Man gets double lifer for murdering girl

Mahila Court Judge M.P. Subramaniam on Friday awarded double life imprisonment to M. Samiappan (43) of Pooluvapatti, Tirupur, for attempt to rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl on July 12, 2011. He committed the crime along with two of his accomplices and fled the spot with 12 sovereigns of gold jewellery.

His accomplices S. Kannan alias Tamilazhagan (30) and N. Ramkumar (27) were awarded double life imprisonment in the case a month ago. But Samiappan was under hiding.

Special Public Prosecutor R. Sarojini said that Samiappan was nabbed by the police at his house on Wednesday. He was produced before the court on Friday.

Since trial in the case was already over, the judge sentenced him to double life imprisonment for trespassing into the house and for murdering the girl, seven years for robbery and five years for attempt to rape – which is to be served concurrently.

Fine

A fine of Rs. 4,000 was imposed on him, and on failing to pay that he will have to spend one more year in jail.
