The Kurichi unit of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) organised a protest at Sundarapuram, on Sunday, condemning the Coimbatore Corporation for allegedly neglecting their locality. More than 300 persons including a few women took part in the protest organised by DMK’s Kurichi unit secretary N. Prabakaran.
The former chairman of Kurichi Municipality claimed that the locality that is part of Kinathukadavu Assembly Segment was getting water supply once a week before it was attached to the Corporation, in 2011.
“Residents are now getting drinking water only once in 15 to 20 days despite the launch of Aliyar Water Supply Scheme during the DMK regime,” he said.
Stating that some areas in the city got water supply once in two days, he alleged that poor maintenance of the Aliyar Scheme and diverting water from Kurichi area to Kuniyamuthur were reasons for the drastic drop in water supply to their locality.
They also claimed that the locality lacked basic amenities such as street lights, resulting in thefts. The party’s Coimbatore south urban district secretary A. Nachimuthu and former MP S. Viduthalai Virumbi took part in the protest.
