A 53-year-old karate instructor died when his motorcycle skidded while chasing a thief in Gobichettipalayam on Saturday night.

P. Chandran of Soundapur was a karate instructor in a private school in the area. At 11.30 p.m., an unidentified man entered his house and snatched five-sovereign gold jewellery from his wife who was asleep. When she raised an alarm, the man ran away.

Chandran woke up and chased him on his two-wheeler. While negotiating a bend, he lost control of his vehicle, fell down and sustained injuries. His relatives took him to the Government Hospital at Gobichettipalayam where doctors declared him brought dead.

After post-mortem, the body was handed over to relatives on Sunday. Senior police officials said they were going through the footages of surveillance cameras installed at shops and residential areas there to nab the accused.
