The disciplinary committee of the Government Arts College here on Monday conducted an inquiry against first year M.A. History student S. Malathi, whom the College had suspended in the last week of September.

The college had suspended Ms. Malathi after she had conducted a function to celebrate Bhagat Singh’s birth anniversary without the permission of principal K. Chitra.

According to college sources, the committee comprising History Department faculty Ganapriya and Senthurapandian, Computer Applications Department faculty Roselin and Botany Department faculty Viswanathan started the inquiry by 11 a.m. and conducted it for half-an-hour.

The sources said the committee asked her if it was right to conduct a meeting without the principal’s permission and if it was proper to pull out students, who were attending classes, to participate in the function and if it was right to disobey principal’s orders.

At the end of the questioning, the committee asked Ms. Malathi to give a written reply, which she gave, the sources said and added she, however, did not take either her parents or guardian with her, as asked by the college administration.

Ms. Malathi said that she told the committee it was not a crime to have overruled the principal and organised the celebration and that it was her right to carry on political activities on the campus.

She also asked for the immediate revocation of the suspension.

The sources further said that once the committee submitted its report to the principal, the College Governing Council would decide on the next course of action.
