India Post is looking at increasing its customer base for Postal Life Insurance (PLI) in Coimbatore Division as it has extended the policy now for professionals, Sudhir Gopal Jakhere, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Coimbatore, said here on Monday.

Mr. Jakhere told presspersons here that India Post has two lakh customers in the Division for PLI and three lakh customers for RPLI (Rural Postal Life Insurance). It plans to focus more on schools (teachers and non-teaching staff), government institutions, hospitals, and the unorganised staff in these institutions for the policies. “The PLI for professionals is already rolled out. We will promote it in the institutions this academic year,” he said.

On the digital initiatives taken by the Department of Posts in the Division, he said hand-held devices were distributed to all the 96 branch post offices last May. With this, the average transactions a day at a post office has increased from 35 to 48. This is because of the increase in speed in completing the transactions. Each hand-held device is connected to a 12 watt solar panel and has biometric security features. The data is transferred to its core system every day. This also enables regular monitoring and speedy redressal of grievances.

Special counters are functioning at 56 post offices for Aadhaar enrolment and updates. In six post offices in the Division, these counters work extended hours and on Sunday too. On an average, over 10 people are able to enrol a day at each of these counters.

The Division, which has two head post offices, 96 branch post offices, and 78 sub offices, also has 230 postmen using the Postman Mobile Application. They are able to provide various transactions, including real time tracking of parcels and digital signature, through the application.

The Department is developing an e-commerce parcel hub at Sanganur that will function 24 hours a day. It will launch pick up facility for bulk parcel bookings when the hub becomes operational. The existing international parcel centre at the Head Post Office on Goodshed Road books 50 to 75 parcels a day, he added.
