Members of Indian Medical Association-Salem chapter staged a protest wearing black badges here on Saturday demanding justice for the death of a doctor in Rajasthan recently.

The protestors raised slogans urging the State and Central governments to ensure safe working conditions for health workers. Non-emergency out-patient services were cancelled from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in solidarity with Archana Sharma, a doctor in Rajasthan who reportedly killed self after the police registered a case against her allegedly for causing the death of a pregnant woman.

The members said the case was registered against the doctor without following any guidelines issued by the Supreme Court. A case must be registered against police personnel who filed the case against the doctor. They also demanded compensation for the family of Archana Sharma.

The protestors demanded that the Centre enacted a law to protect doctors and changes should be brought in penal codes in registering case against doctors. They also demanded that the medical sector should be kept out of consumer cases.
