A new surveillance network comprising 200 cameras has stepped up the security cover at the busy Gandhipuram and its surroundings in Coimbatore.
The network covers Nanjappa Road, GP signal, Bharathiar Road up to Government Women's Polytechnic College, Avarampalayam Road, VKK Menon Road and the 100 Feet Road.
The network has been established at a cost of ₹ 40 lakh with money donated by shops and establishments in these localities.
The network includes 20 high definition cameras with number plate recognition technology that can detect speeding of vehicles. Among the 20 HD cameras, two are equipped with face recognition technology that can detect faces of persons in the wanted list.
The two cameras are yet to become fully operational.
City Police Commissioner Sumit Sharan inaugurated the network and its control room set up at Thiruvalluvar bus stand.
He said that crime rate would significantly come down as the surveillance coverage keeps on increasing in the city.
Offenders would be caught in any of the surveillance camera that will help the police in cracking crimes, he said.
The new network will also help the police monitor movement of people at the mofussil bus stand, town bus stand and Thiruvalluvar bus stand.
