The rain for the second consecutive day on Friday saw parts of the city inundated. The rain also resulted in good inflow into and outflow from the Pilloor Reservoir forcing the district administration to issue flood alert to those living along River Bhavani banks.

The rain resulted in good flow in River Noyyal and the sudden surge in water flow in Kummitipathi rivulet led to the washing away of a causeway in Kummittipathi, near Velanthavalam.

Sources in the district administration said following reduced inflow into Pilloor Reservoir on Friday evening, the Tangedco that uses the Reservoir for hydel power generation closed the shutters. But an early morning surge in inflow of around 14,000 cusecs resulted in the water level rising. The Tangedco authorities to maintain the water level in the reservoir opened four shutters to discharge an equal quantity of water into River Bhavani.

By around 8 a.m., after the inflow reduced to around 7,000 cusecs, the Tangedco closed two shutters but continued to discharge 7,000 cusecs through the other two shutters into the River, the sources said and added that this forced them to issue the flood alert in the early hours of Saturday to those living along River Bhavani banks, the sources said.

The Forest Department closed down its tourism points in Baralikadu and Poochimathur.

In Coimbatore city, rainwater entered a few houses at Kotaimedu in Ward 74. Coimbatore Corporation officials said the civic body deployed lorries to pump out the water. Similar instances of inundation and water entering houses in low-lying areas were reported in a few areas in West Zone as well.

The rainfall recorded in the district in the 24 hours that ended 8 a.m. Saturday are: Coimbatore Airport 41.8mm, Mettupalayam 56.3mm, Valparai 32mm, Pollachi 35mm, Coimbatore South 25mm, Periyanaickenpalayam 18mm, TNAU 30mm.
