The Coimbatore Corporation has chosen a Bangalore-based firm to generate 500 MW power from the waste accumulated in the Corporation areas under a public-private partnership project.
Of the five firms that had submitted solid waste management proposals for processing 500 tonnes, the Bangalore firm was short-listed by a committee.
The civic body was to implement PPP model worth around Rs. 689.3 crore under Jawarhalal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
The Corporation made a decision to this effect during its urgent council meeting convened on Thursday.
A resolution seeking to raise a compound wall around the corporation compost yard at Vellalore at a cost of Rs. 74.25 lakh was also passed.
Mayor S.M. Velusamy informed the councillors that the Corporation has submitted a proposal to the State Government to establish a power plant, at a cost of Rs. 95 lakh, that could be fuelled by vegetable, fruits and food waste for the electric crematorium at Chokkampudur.
A move for inviting ‘request for proposal’ to remove and process the construction debris by establishing a plant at Ukkadam was also approved.
The Corporation has also hiked the Professional Tax and extended it to the new added areas of the Coimbatore Corporation ( see table )
The civic body also passed a resolution seeking permission and sanction for Rs. 39.85 lakh to the Southern Railways for creating the requisite infrastructure at Urumandampalayam Railway Station on the Coimbatore – Mettupalayam section under the Shramdhan initiative.
There had been a demand for reviving three of the defunct stations on this route. The revival of the station and a stoppage of the Coimbatore – Mettupalayam train at these stations is expected to decongest Mettupalayam Road. Under the Integrated Urban Development Programme, road renewal works are going to be taken up at 49 roads covering 112.37 km at a total cost of Rs. 32.83 crore during the current financial year. The State Government had agreed to bear 75 per cent of the expenditure.
A resolution approving the construction of a women and children’s park with a gymnasium at Induma Nagar (ward 37) in the East Zone at a cost of Rrs. 75 lakh was also passed.
In its 2013-14 budget, the civic body had sanctioned funds for constructing parks in Corporation lands in all the five zones.

A resolution authorising the supply of one lakh litres of drinking water every day from the overhead tank near Sharada Mill to residents of Nanjundapuram Road, Golden Nagar, Venketramana Nagar, Lakshmi Narayana Nagar and Nadar Colony was also passed.
The cost would be borne by the Vellalore Town Panchayat as these areas came under the local body.
In order to provide uniform drinking water to the newly-added Corporation areas of Kavundenpalayam, Vadavalli and Veerakeralam, the Council’s consent was sought to approach the Tamil Nadu Drinking Water Investment Corporation for a detailed project report and remit the money needed for the same.
