The Senator Hall of Hotel Residency is all decked up. Rajasthan Cosmo Club and Foundation has organised an exhibition called Meena Bazaar of jewellery, clothes and home décor products. There is a buzz as film actor Aishwarya Rajesh of Kakkamuttai fame, has inaugurated the event.

The expo has over 65 stalls from across the country.

Visitors can expect a range of goodies ranging from accessories to savories. There are bronze lampshades from New Delhi priced between Rs. 1,000 and Rs.40,000. There are also pappads, tamarind toffee, nuts and traditional sweets at the food stalls. There are different-flavoured cupcakes too.  Attractive hair clips, glitzy footwear, tunics, trendy crop tops and silver jhumkas attract young fashionistas of the city to them.

The proceeds for the expo go into providing free clothes such as uniforms and bed sheets to the under-privileged. “We have been conducting the exhibition for the last 13 years. We wanted to test the waters in Coimbatore. We are also providing refurbished old clothes to workers on construction sites. We have dispatched around 45,000 uniforms to orphanages,” said Sanjay Bhansali, one of the organisers.

There is another unexpected surprise. You may spot a familiar, benevolent face smiling at you. Bollywood actor, Alok Nath sits at one corner, far away from the crowd and cameras. The star, who is taking a short break from the acting career, has come to assist his wife, in handling her garments and home décor store.

(The expo is on today from

10 a.m. to 8 p.m.)
