Exclusive bins likely for poultry waste

Civic body to examine feasibility of placing exclusive bins in various places

March 31, 2012 10:05 am | Updated 10:05 am IST - COIMBATORE:

A suggestion to provide exclusive bins for poultry waste will be considered by the Coimbatore Corporation, Commissioner T.K. Ponnusamy told poultry and meat stall owners at a meeting on Friday.

He said he would have to consult the Mayor and Council before arriving at a final decision but assured the poultry shop owners that the bins would be placed. Both the parties agreed that the colour of the bins could be red so as to distinguish them from other bins the Corporation had placed.

In the meanwhile, the Corporation, as per the poultry owners' request, promised to place vehicles at vantage points in the five zones to collect the waste the shops generated.

Rough estimates by poultry owners suggests that nearly 20 tonnes poultry waste is generated a day in the city and this doubles during weekends.

As a long term solution, the Commissioner said the Corporation would call for expression of interest from parties interested in making dog feed using poultry waste.

This was after incinerating poultry waste was ruled out owing to high moisture content of the material being discarded.
