The long-pending escalator at Platform 1 of Coimbatore Railway Station is expected to be functional within 20 days, according to railway officials.

“We have sought permission for the electricity connection for the escalator,” an official said on Saturday, adding that works for the escalator have almost been completed.

Elevator

An elevator for Platforms 1 and 2 will also be functional by the end of November.

Catering to the needs of the differently abled and senior citizens, the Coimbatore Railway Station has four escalators and one elevator currently functioning on its premises.

However, the official noted that there are no immediate plans for new escalators due to space constraints.

Works for the escalator began earlier this year and has ran into many delays since then.

Battery car service

Railway officials said that the battery car service to ferry differently abled passengers and senior citizens are available for Platforms 1 to 4.

“The cars are unable to reach Platforms 5 and 6 at present,” the official said, adding that most of the arrivals and departures of trains occur in the first four platforms.

The cars pick the passengers at the entrance of the railway station and reach the platforms via a ramp near the two-wheeler parking area.

At present, only one battery car is available, officials said, noting that new cars will be introduced depending on the increase in its usage.
