Drive against sale of unauthorised number plates

The Coimbatore Rural Police have slapped 25 cases against as many traders for selling unauthorised number plates that looked like high-security number plates.

The Periyanaickenpalayam, Karamadai, Mettupalayam, Thudiyalur, Anamalai, Chettipalayam, Kovilpalayam, Annur, Sulur, Karumathampatty, Vadavalli and Pollachi East police have all slapped cases under Sections 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) of the Indian Penal Code. The Coimbatore City Police have slapped five cases against as many manufacturers and those selling the number plates. They have invoked Section 473 (making or possessing counterfeit seal with intent to commit forgery) of the Indian Penal Code as well.

Staff Reporter adds from Tirupur: The city police imposed fines on seven persons for allegedly using the vehicle number plates with ‘IND’ written on it and using bogus holograms on the plate. City police sources said such number plates should be removed from all vehicles at the earliest.
