Members of the Gandhiya Makkal Iyakkam on Sunday conducted a meeting in Jagadala village, near Coonoor, against liquor consumption and encouraged 20 persons to take a vow to avoid liquor, said the movement’s district president Valli Ramesh.

The Nilgiris district had been hit hard by youth consuming liquor, families going penniless and young women turning widows. To reverse the trend, the movement had been conducting the programme for the past three years, by meeting villagers, village elders and taking their support to encourage youth to abstain from liquor.

The movement volunteers would take two to three months to prepare the villagers for the meeting and they would hold it on a Sunday, she added.
