The last date for finalising the list of students admitted in private schools under Right To Education (RTE) Act has been extended by a couple of days to Friday. The schools have been given the additional time to fill up the vacant seats. They were supposed to complete the process by Wednesday.
A School Education Department Official told The Hindu here on Wednesday that the total number of seats in the entry-level classes was 15,546 seats, of which 3,985 have been set aside for RTE Act quota. However, as on Wednesday only 2,453 have been filled. The process of drawing lots in schools with applications in excess of the seats would be taken up after Friday. Meanwhile, MDMK youth wing secretary V. Eswaran has termed the entire admission process ‘a farce’ and stated that the extension would not benefit the weaker sections.
