Corporation finds itself comfortable on water supply front this summer

Granting of water supply connections to continue

May 16, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - COIMBATORE:

The Coimbatore Corporation has never had it as good as this summer in the recent past on the water supply front. The water level in the reservoirs that feed the city is good, thanks to recent rains in the city and also in the catchments of the reservoirs.

This has resulted in the water level not going down as fast as it does during summer, say water supply managers, pointing out that the civic body has been getting over 60 million litres a day (mld) for the past few days. As of May 15 this year, the civic body received 62 mld water. A year ago it was 51 mld and in 2013 it was a paltry 28.50 mld.

For the residents, this means improved water supply and, above all, continuance of issue of water supply connections.

Corporation Commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan says that the civic body has not stopped freezing water supply connections, as it often does ahead of summer. This only reflects to comfortable water storage position in the reservoirs.

As of May 15, the Siruvani Reservoir had over 18 feet water (as against 12 feet last year) and received good rains in the past couple of days. The Corporation data said that on May 12, the Reservoir had received eight mm, on May 13 it recorded 43 mm, on May 14 it was 25 mm and on May 15 the rainfall was 16 mm (The figures are for the 24 hours ending 8 a.m. on the day mentioned).

The Corporation is comfortable on the Pilloor water supply front, drawing 125 mld from its scheme and getting another 20 mld from the TWAD Board’s Pilloor drinking water supply scheme for distribution to Thudiyalur, Vellakinar and a few other areas in the North Zone.

The water supply managers said that the Corporation had since September 2014, received 10,511 applications for new water supply connection. Of those it had sanctioned 6,929 applications and of those it had issued work orders for 4,011 connections. The Corporation would continue to grant connections as even with the current water position it would be in a position to meet the drinking water needs till July end, they added.
