Coimbatore that could have improved its Swachh Sarvekshan 2018 ranking managed to retain its 16th rank because the Coimbatore Corporation could not get the vehicles and bins in time, the civic body sources said.

Coimbatore retained the last year’s ranking - 16th position - in the Swachh Sarvekshan 2018, a ranking of clean cities the Central Government released on Saturday under the Swachh Bharat programme.

Commenting on city’s position in the Swachh Sarvekshan 2018 rank list, Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan said he was glad that the city had maintained its rank.

Specified areas

There were specified areas that the civic body could improve on and the focus in the coming months would be to address those areas - improving collection and disposable mechanism.

The city had scored 3,292 out of 4,000 marks.

Marks

Of the three components in the ranking that make up the 4,000 marks, the city had scored 1,219 out of 1,400 for documenting the works it had done, 983 out of 1,200 awarded by the inspecting team and 1,089 out of 1,400 for citizen feedback.

Corporation officials said the failure to provide battery-operated vehicles for waste collection, bins and push carts had prevented the city from climbing up the ladder.

Another area that the Corporation should pay attention was to improve its manpower by engaging more workers to strengthen collection system.

It was because the door-to-door collection was weak and the citizen feed mark was low, and that had reflected in the ranking.
