Conservancy workers stage protest

June 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:36 am IST - COIMBATORE:

Conservancy workers of the award-winning Kurudampalayam Panchayat staged a protest on Wednesday morning alleging that the Panchayat president D. Ravi had assaulted two workers. Mr. Ravi, however, had denied slapping the workers.

According to sources, Mr. Ravi took on worker Rangasamy and driver Kumar when they were about to have breakfast at a restaurant in the area, asking why were they avoiding work while working for a consideration for the restaurant.

This led to a war of words resulting in the Panchayat president slapping the workers in front of the restaurant.

Angered by the president’s assault, the workers informed their colleagues, who with the support of their fellow conservancy workers in Asokapuram, Thagadam and a few other areas staged a demonstration demanding that the president tender unconditional apology. After negotiations, the president tendered an apology.
