The phase one section of the flyover project on Nanjappa Road at Gandhipuram, which is expected to be completed by June next year, saw commencement of work for double box girder on Wednesday.

According to Divisional Engineer of the State Highways Department J. Kannan, the work is for 45 metres long double box girder. The bottom slab will be eight metres side, and the top slab will be 16.6 metres wide.

The height will be 2.5 metres. The concrete work will be taken up in three stages — bottom slab, sides and then top slab.

Though there is the option of going in for precast boxes, in this case, it was decided to go in for laying concrete at the work site. The work for 45 metres will be completed in a week, he said.

The phase one of the project had four such spans and the longest will be 52 metres on 100 feet road. This is one of the main works in the project and after completing it, the riding surface will be prepared.

The flyover is coming up at a total cost of Rs. 162 crore and the first phase is for 1.7km from Nanjappa Road. Works started for this four-lane, divided carriageway last year and it is expected to be completed by mid-2016.

Works for the second phase, which is for 1.2km from 100 feet road to Chinnasamy Naidu Road, will begin shortly and it is expected to be completed in April 2017. This will be a two-lane, undivided carriageway and the second level of the flyover.
