Investors thronged the Economic Offences Wing of the City Police on Friday for filing complaints against the promoters of a defunct online multi-level marketing firm.
Investors first complained of default and delay in return on investments by an online firm. Initially, 1.72 lakh investors complained of cheating to a tune of Rs. 818 crore. Police had registered cases against the promoters of the firm Senthilkumar and Vivek.
The case was subsequently transferred to the Economic Offences Wing. The teams identified and recovered properties worth Rs. 70 crore belonging to the promoters. On April 2, nearly 200 people thronged the office and on April 4, the number increased manifold and more than 500 persons thronged the office from various places in and around Coimbatore and Western Tamil Nadu. Unable to manage the crowd, EOW personnel introduced a staggered system of accepting complaints and issued tokens to the investors for turning up on the dates fixed for them. On an average, the police are planning to process complaints from 25 to 50 persons. On Friday, when more than 1,000 people turned up, the police resumed the process of issuing tokens and now complainants have been given date till June end for filing complaints.
