The CPR Environmental Education Center and the National Green Corps (NGC) conducted an awareness programme on the need to stop using plastic products in the Nilgiris on Wednesday.

The programme, which was conducted at the Ooty Lake and Boat House, was aimed at sensitising tourists to the negative effects of plastic on the environment.

Seasonal drive

“This is a seasonal programme which we conduct every year in popular tourist locations like the boat house, the botanical garden and Sim's Park,” said V. Sivadas, NGC co-ordinator for the Coonoor Education District.

The organisers of the programme said that though awareness among tourists about the ban on plastics has improved, there need to be more measures initiated by the district administration to help get the message across.

“For a start, public announcements in various regional languages at the major tourist locations would help greatly,” added Mr. Sivadas.
