Birth, death registration fee hike draws flak

December 01, 2017 10:00 am | Updated 10:00 am IST - COIMBATORE

From Friday, the Coimbatore Corporation will charge ₹200 for a birth or death certificate, raising it from just ₹5 charged so long.

Civic body sources said the hike followed a GO amending certain provisions of the Tamil Nadu Birth and Deaths Rules, 2000. There is no charge to register a birth or death within 21 days. From the 22nd day till the 30th, the applicant has to pay ₹100 for registration (old rate ₹2) and another ₹200 for the certificate. Registration from the 31st day to a year will cost ₹200 (old rate ₹5). Registration after a year will be ₹500 (old rate ₹10). Inclusion of name in the birth certificate a year after the birth is up from ₹5 to ₹200. Extra copy of birth/ death certificate is ₹200.

DMK MLA from Singanallur N. Karthik said the revision in the absence of a Council smacked of executive authoritarianism.

Former CPI Councillor K. Purushothaman said the hike was made by those who did not know of other ways to bring revenue to the Corporation.
