Advocate Bhavani B. Mohan said on Monday that he will appear as counsel for Maoist Deepak at the Principal Sessions and District Court, Coimbatore, which is scheduled to hear a custody application filed by the Thadagam police on Tuesday.
Mr. Mohan told The Hindu that he volunteered to appear for Deepak who was arrested by the Special Task Force from a forest area near Anaikatti on November 9. Deepak is currently in judicial custody and under treatment at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
“A counter petition will be filed before the court on Tuesday challenging the custody application submitted by the police. The forces had already questioned Deepak when he was arrested and extracted information. He was also subjected to torture,” Mr. Mohan alleged.
He alleged that various efforts by his junior advocates to meet Deepak with the permission of prison authorities failed as the police and CMCH administration did not cooperate. A team of police officers from Sukma district of Chhattisgarh had also come to the court on Monday to seek custody of Deepak for investigation into alleged cases against him in Chhattisgarh.
