Traffic police in The Nilgiris district have procured five speed laser guns to check over speeding on the roads. These speed guns have been provided under the modernisation of police force scheme. Two of them would be used by them in Udhagamandalam town and one each in Coonoor, Kotagiri and Gudalur towns.

Though scope for over speeding in this district is lesser, there are quite a few incidents where vehicles have gone off the roads in the Ghat section. Over the years the district police did not have scientific proof to nab over speeding vehicles red-handed.

A traffic police officer said that speed limit in the towns, periphery and ghat section would be fixed by the Regional Transport Office. The upper limit would be recorded in the speed guns. Speed guns would be accompanied by wireless printers in which the speed of particular vehicles that cross the speed limit get printed automatically.

On Tuesday, the technical wing police trained field level traffic police personnel.
