Constant vigil against fleecing at Corporation's public utility areas

May 25, 2010 12:21 pm | Updated 12:21 pm IST - COIMBATORE:

The Coimbatore Corporation says it is maintaining constant vigil against fleecing of the public at parking lots and pay-and-use toilets in the city.

Following complaints of collecting excess fee, the Corporation's zonal offices are carrying out checks at these public utility areas to crack down on the malpractice.

Apart from the continuous checks by the each of the four zonal offices in their own jurisdiction, random checks are being conducted by each of these offices in the jurisdiction of the other. Officials say these checks are being carried out regularly as per the orders of the Corporation Commissioner.

The Commissioner had ordered the levying of hefty fines on those found collecting excess fee from the public. The lessee of the two-wheeler lot at the Gandhipuram Bus Stand was fined Rs. 5,000 and the lessee of the four-wheeler parking lot on Cross-Cut Road paid a fine of Rs. 50,000. In a recent episode, the lessee of the pay-and-use toilet at the Singanallur Bus Stand was fined Rs. 10,000 after the Corporation detected excess fee collection.

The Corporation has said that while hefty fines would be collected to punish the lessees resorting to excess fee collection, recurrence of the malpractice would lead to cancellation of the lease.
