Coimbatore City Police on Tuesday removed more than 15 activists of the Indu Makkal Katchi (Arjun Sampath) when they attempted to lock a Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC)-run liquor shop in Town Hall demanding declaration of dry day on January 12 in order to mark Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary.
The agitators accused the State of fixing targets and increasing the sale of Indian Made Foreign Liquor and selling it through a Government agency without any concern for the health of the consumers and the future of their families.
Future
A substantial portion of liquor lovers are in the prime of their age and thus the future of the country is being put at stake, they alleged.
Hence, in order to protect the youth and ensure the future of the nation, January 12, Swami Vivekananda’s birth day should be declared a dry day.
Closed
They said that TASMAC shops should remain closed at least for that one day.
The agitators who came with locks to close the TASMAC shop were removed by the police and later released.
